Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a serious crime in Virginia. It is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor, which is the most serious misdemeanor in Virginia. There are two ways that a person can contribute to the delinquency of a minor under the law. Under Va. Code § 18.2-371, it happens when a person:

    • Willfully contributes to, encourages, or causes the delinquency of a child or neglects or abuses a child; or
    • Engages in consensual sexual or anal intercourse with a child who is 15 years old or older

Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a Class 1 Misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Moreover, a person convicted of this crime could be ordered to have no contact with the victim.
