Fairfax County’s annual Road Shark campaign is in full swing again, and if you have received a traffic or reckless driving citation recently, it’s no coincidence.

What is Road Shark?

Launched in 1999, Road Shark is a high-visibility enforcement program led by the Fairfax County Police Department in partnership with the Virginia State Police. It’s goal? Crack down on driving offenses, from speeding to DUI, in targeted areas and educate the community on the dangers of reckless driving behavior.

2025 Road Shark Citations

The 2025 Road Shark campaign kicked off on March 17, organizing enforcement into monthly “waves.” Each wave lasts one week of March, April, June, August, and October.

So far, the 2025 Road Shark initiative has resulted in over 17,500 citations and warnings in just the first two weeks of the campaign. Last year, the Road Shark campaign resulted in nearly 35,000 citations and warnings, so more are sure to come.

What Does this Mean for My Case?

You should expect stricter enforcement during the Road Shark campaign. FCPD and VSP ramps up patrols and citations significantly during its waves. You should also expect more reckless driving charges than usual. Officers may make traffic stops for minor infractions, but that does not always justify a reckless driving charge. Challenging the stop, reviewing the evidence, and appearing in court can make a difference.

What is Reckless Driving?

Reckless driving is a misdemeanor in Virginia, making it more serious than a typical traffic infraction. Unlike a speeding ticket, which you might pay and forget about, reckless driving comes with significant criminal penalties.

Virginia law defines reckless driving as on any highway recklessly, at a speed, or in a manner to endanger any person’s life, limb, or property (VA Code § 46.2-862). Reckless driving can be charged as reckless driving by speed or for endangering life, limb, or property, regardless of speed. The decision by the Commonwealth to charge reckless driving rather than speeding can depend on your speed and the speed limit.

What are the Consequences of Reckless Driving?

Reckless driving is a Class 1 Misdemeanor, the most serious class of misdemeanors in Virginia. A conviction is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500. Not only that, but a misdemeanor conviction results in a permanent criminal record and can have impacts on employment, security clearances, education, immigration, and insurance. A reckless driving conviction in Virginia can have serious financial consequences, especially regarding auto insurance. Risky driving behavior and DMV demerit points cause insurance companies to raise rates. Thus, you could experience significant increases in premiums or, in a few cases, face policy cancellation. Insurance companies may flag your record due to a traffic ticket for careless driving, making it harder to find affordable coverage.

To prevent potential insurance rate increases, it is important to consult with an experienced criminal defense lawyer who can help minimize the effects of the charge. A law firm experienced in reckless driving cases can direct you through the legal process and offer help to relieve the consequences.
