Matthew Cox

Matt is an associate attorney in the Criminal Defense and Data & Privacy Law practice groups. He is committed to finding creative, holistic solutions for his clients that are tailored to each client’s needs.

In the Criminal Defense practice group, he passionately advocates for clients in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun, and other counties across Virginia. Matt represents clients in misdemeanor matters, including reckless driving, carrying a weapon in an airport, selling alcohol/tobacco to a minor, larceny, protest offenses, public intoxication, and assault and battery. Matt also works with the Criminal Defense Practice Group on more serious felony charges. He has successfully argued for the dismissal of a felony charge while serving as co-counsel in a felony DUI jury trial, among other motions and hearings.

In the Data & Privacy Law practice group, Matt’s practice focuses on counseling businesses on compliance with state, federal, and international privacy regulations, focusing on the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, CCPA, GDPR, and HIPAA. Matt also assists businesses respond to law enforcement requests for data through federal grand jury subpoenas.

Matt joined the firm after receiving his law degree from The George Washington University Law School. During law school, he worked at the United States Sentencing Commission where he supported data driven criminal justice research and became well-versed in applying the sentencing guidelines to federal criminal matters. Prior to law school, he earned his master’s degree in criminology from the University of Pennsylvania, having most notably partnered with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office to study the effects of a prosecution diversion program among defendants facing misdemeanor criminal charges.
